Global youth partnership with United Nations Democracy Fund
My Life My Say (MLMS) is excited to announce its new partnership with the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF). Together, MLMS and the UNDEF will be hosting a series of Democracy Cafés which will focus on youth participation in democracy.
UNDEF is partnering with MLMS to hold three virtual Democracy Cafés starting in August 2020, focused on civil society activism, democratic processes, and intergenerational exchange.
MLMS’ Democracy Café concept is our reinvigoration of the 17th century coffee house tradition where members of society would gather and discuss local issues. To date, MLMS has hosted over 110 Democracy Cafés in coffee shops across the UK, Europe and America.
Mete Coban MBE, CEO, My Life My Say said: “I’m incredibly excited to be bringing the Democracy Café concept to the UNDEF. It allows members of society to come together and discuss local, national and international issues. The first session will focus on youth participation in democracy and we’re looking forward to co-hosting it!”
Annika Savill Executive Head of the UN Democracy Fund said: “Enabling young people to live in dignity is a mission of paramount importance to the United Nations. The UN Democracy Fund is proud to launch these cafés in partnership with MLMS, as the first step in UNDEF’s pilot platform to strengthen the voice of youth, identify key challenges facing them, and articulate solutions in preparation for a generational shift. Our platform is a pioneering effort of its kind.”
The Democracy Café concept received the UK Government’s 2018 National Democracy Change Maker Award which recognises an organisation that has put forward a new idea to increase access to democracy, convinced others of the merit of their idea and affected a real change that benefits the greater good.
